A multitude of online vendors, such as eBay, Tradus, and rediff, are selling the iPhone 5 in India before its official launch, but the device is priced at a premium.
On shopping.rediff.com, the factory unlocked iPhone 5 16GB is available for Rs. 54,990.
On Tradus, the factory unlocked iPhone 5 16GB is available for Rs. 59,500, the 32GB variant is available for Rs. 73,599, while the the top of the line 64GB iPhone 5 is available for Rs. 86,699.
On eBay.in, the 16GB iPhone 5 starts for as low as Rs. 54,999.
Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 5 in India within the next two months and the smartphone may be priced at roughly Rs. 45,000 for the 16GB variant. As a consumer are you willing to pay Rs. 10,000 premium for a device that will be officially available in India in the next two months? Besides, you may also consider that Nano-SIM cards aren’t officially available in India yet.
This pricing makes no sense. In USA the iPhone5 sells for 16GB Rs. 10,600, the 32GB sells for Rs. 15,900 and the 64GB sells for Rs. 21,130. I understand about transportation and import duty costs but, Rs. 45,000 for a 16GB iPhone5 sounds extremely high. That's a difference of Rs. 34,400 for the iPhone5 in India versus US prices. Something is most definitely wrong with the India prices. Once again it seems the middle men are making a large amount of profit from the consumer. Greed, has got a strangle hold on India.
